A Mansion with
800 Years of History
The historic residence of Camara Suites Andros dates back to the period of the Venetian occupation of Andros in the early 13th century. During that time, the island became a small Latin dominion under the rule of Marino Dandolo, who commissioned the construction of several defensive structures across the peninsula.
The building originally formed part of the defensive towers that protected the Lower Castle of Andros, a fortified settlement that gradually developed into the historic town of Andros Chora. Over time the area evolved into a lively medieval community, combining commerce, maritime activity and cultural life within the fortified walls of the settlement.
A Journey Through the Centuries
Through the centuries, the historic residence that today hosts Camara Suites Andros has witnessed the evolving story of Andros Chora, from the era of Venetian rule and maritime prosperity to the modern life of the island. Carefully restored with respect for its architectural heritage, the mansion continues its journey through time, welcoming visitors who wish to experience the unique atmosphere of history, tradition and authentic island living.
From the Venetian Era to the Greek Revolution
For centuries the town of Andros Chora played an important role in the maritime and commercial history of the island. During the 16th century the island passed from Venetian to Ottoman rule, while pirate raids were frequent in the Aegean Sea, shaping the defensive architecture of the town.
Andros also played a significant role during the Greek War of Independence in 1821. The scholar and leader Theophilos Kairis, one of the most important figures of the Greek Enlightenment, raised the flag of revolution in the nearby Church of Saint George, located just a short distance from the residence.
A Historic Residence of Seafaring Families
Following the liberation of Greece, the historic houses of the castle area were gradually inhabited by wealthy shipowners, merchants and landowners, reflecting the strong maritime tradition of Andros. The residence eventually came into the possession of the noble Bistis family, who preserved the architectural identity of the building.
Like many houses of the castle district, the mansion followed the characteristic architectural style of the period, featuring two floors, elegant arches and marble pillars, influenced by the Venetian architectural tradition that shaped the historic town.
War, Restoration and Preservation
During the German naval bombardment of 1943, several buildings in the castle area were heavily damaged, including parts of the historic residence. The house served as a refuge for residents of the neighborhood thanks to its strong stone construction.
After the war, the residence was restored by the family of shipowner Matthaios Koutsoukos, who had served in the Merchant Navy during the war and was later honored by the British Admiralty for rescuing survivors of a British submarine. Even today, traces of the bombardment can still be seen in the wooden beams supporting the roof.
From Historic Residence to Boutique Suites
The mansion was eventually inherited by Louiza Diapouli and her husband Dimitrios Stogioglou, who undertook the careful restoration of the historic building. With respect for the architectural character and the long history of the residence, the house was transformed into what is today Camara Suites Andros.
Today the building welcomes visitors from around the world, offering a unique stay where history, architecture and modern comfort come together in the peaceful atmosphere of Andros Chora.
